[Highsnobiety] This week Disney unveiled the first official images from their upcoming film Maleficent, with Angelina Jolie featured as the staring role. The project is contributing to the newest Hollywood trend of transforming fairytale classic into cinema blockbuster.

This sweeping trend, much like the comic book trend of the 2000′s, has already brought classics such as 2010′s  “Alice in Wonderland” and 2012′s “Snow White and the Huntsmen” to the silver screen. The production of Maleficent has already begun with Angelina Jolie set to play the wicked fairy who has in it for Sleeping Beauty . Disney promises that the film will tell a different story of this fairytale classic.

Jolie is listed as one of the executive producers for the film and is surrounded by a supporting cast including Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton and Juno Temple. With the project is being directed by Robert Stromberg, using a script by Linda Woolverton whose written classics as The Lion King, Beauty And The Beast.

Maleficent is scheduled to open in the US March 2013
